New website design is here!
As you’ll know if you’ve been following us here and on social media recently, we’ve been hard at work redeveloping the Raspberry Pi website. We’re excited to announce our new-look site today! You’ll find this new site has the following features:
- Optimised for use with the Raspberry Pi
- Handsome retro look and feel
- Elegant colour scheme
- ASCII art for the new millennium
- Tastes of electric limes when licked.
Have a look around and tell us what you think! Many thanks to Ben Nuttall for his design work, which we plan on using to repel new customers from now on.
Update (2nd April): Yes, it was an April Fool’s prank. We’re really pleased so many of you enjoyed the site yesterday, and feel sorry for those of you who got really upset about it. It turned out to be one of our most commented posts ever. We intend to make the stylesheet available as a novelty (don’t worry, we won’t force it upon you).
Update (4th April): You can now view the site in glorious monospace by appending ?fool
to the end of any URL on the site e.g. raspberrypi.org/new-website-design-is-here/?fool

Love the retro style, reminds me of when I first started playing with HTML in 1994…
Please do not revert back to the old style on April 2nd!
Alina
I also love this retro style! Please, please, please keep this as an option.
ColinD
Aye, green on black retro worked very well for me all day. Was quite happy with that and would love to be able to select it as an option in the future.
Alessandro
Today is April 1st, isn’t it?
xqsnow
Love this style. Look nice.
Aj
Fantastic design ;-)
Next step smoke signals.
1st of April. (is that a spoiler)
Jednorozec
I’m going blind.
Davespice
This will win a couple of design awards I am sure :)
Ty
To be honest, I’d be happy if this stayed true
This is awesome!
Anthony Bologna
I agree, it is actually very easy to read, fast to load, and focuses on the content not the bling. Make it a permanent option please! It is good to go somewhere for the content not the pretty.
Martin Seebe
Retro style Looks Great, but all the Time? A Mixturen will be Nixe. You are joking.
Poison[BLX]
You know, it’s not often that I get to see a site with the same look and feel in a ‘modern’ overweight browser as I get with elinks! (is it bad that I had to go through the trouble to start X just to see what changed?)
PaulDow
I need to stare at the screen for 30 seconds. After that when I close my eyes I can read the page.
Tina
It’s true ! I tried it myself !!! ;-)
Nim
“list-style-type: binary;” <3
John
Dude! This is the best design ever!! :D
I love you fellas!
daizhi
back to 1990’s ?
Jaron
Here is the funny thing: I use this color-scheme on a daily basis. In Firefox, I am able to switch between the regular color-scheme which the website prescribes and the color-scheme which I prescribe with black background and green text. At first, I was looking at this page with my scheme. Then I looked at it with the website’s scheme. I thought, “What is the difference? Oh, there is some red text.” I honestly love this color-scheme and try to implement it as much as possible on my computer. It is so much easier on my eyes, and there is so much less light-pollution from my screen. How much light do you really need to come out of your monitor in order to functionally know what is happening? Also, green is my favorite color. Unfortunately, some websites are not optimal for this scheme, e.g. I cannot directly see the search-bar on . I wish that more websites would be designed so that switching to this high-contrast color-scheme would still show everything which should be there. Even if it is just for one day, I am glad that the good people of the Raspberry Pi Foundation used this color-scheme and font-style. I appreciate it very much.
Jaron
Correction: “… see the search-bar on Hulu.”
wallarug
Great work on the design… you have officially broken every design rule.
Ian Bardsley
Hmmmm…Just getting a Text Only page.
Linux Mint 16, Chromium Browser
adfjk
me too, on Linux Mint 13, Chrome Browser
Ben Nuttall
Have you tried Ubuntu? It’s like Mint, just less green.
lamyrus
LOL really it took me five minutes to get the tears from my eyes and have a go at my keyboard to type this comment. Indeed all rules where broken but I loved it!
John
Please tell me this is a sick April Fool’s joke. This is hideous!
Colin Kong
Nice Site!!! BTW Happy April Fools
Dave
Is this all tables too?
markb
Excellent! Please don’t revert. Of course I find the two colours a bit flash, a real terminal only shows green on black.
Jon
The only thing that keeps med from thinking April Fools, is the minor details in the design. I first looked at the site from a cellphone browser, and I saw numbering in binary form. Through a desktop browser, there are bullets and decimal numbers. I really do not hope that you have time to spend on such detail on a design that only shows in one day.
Please keep the design, I got totally retro, and started to think back to the good old days of hand coding HTML, having only work on Mozilla, as mentioned in a prio reply, mid 1990’s.
Good work!
Ben Nuttall
A lot of time?

What do you think?
Joe W
What changed? Lynx doesn’t really do much with formatting.
jorrit majkowski
Wow hoe cool is this…ons step foreward two steps back…2014.4.1? Whhahahahahaha
nica
I like it for the next 365 days!!!

Err………When I see the webside I feel as if I were back to the ancient. What a April Fools trick! Happy !

I love it! Please keep

My wife will love it. I will no longer spend money buying all of these obscure electronic components to make the great looking projects presented on the website.
Tnw513
Ahah it’s wonderful :D
Stephen Scott
Wow.
I’m gonna keep the html and css for posterity. It’s so fast on my Blackberry browser. Who needs Javascript and Responsive Web Design, when you can instead party like it’s 1995?
(Seriously, keep it as a style you can choose from a menu, alongside the usual Web 2.0/rounded button malarkey :-p )
Alan O’Donohoe
* – *
Hmmm… I have to admit at being a little disappointed how the ‘new site’ does not reflect modern developments. I was really expecting that the site was going to be 3D navigable and make use of a typeface completely rendered from Minecraft blocks.
Gianni
I Like it also if it is for the April Fools’ Day
Alan O’Donohoe
ASCII Experiment…

I once had a P1 133 MHz. This site looks like what fell out of it when I shook it very hard.
Ryan Walmsley
Michael Horne
Love it Ben. Good job. Hee hee :-)
Alex
I guess this “New Design” is just an Aprils Fool!
dede_ii
THIS is SCANDALOUS….
Where is the beautiful preceding site ?
I’m considering this new design like an outrageous result made only to annoy us….
Let me tell you, little RaspberryPi webmaster, I Don’t like your new design… it’s like a Green Shrekious monstruosity…
Thanks not a lot for all…
Sébastien
Ben Nuttall
I love you so much
Alan O’Donohoe
Alan O’Donohoe
Is it a monospaced font? My ASCII art experiments seem to get compressed and fail. :-(
Dio
Alan, good effort, but I guess your raspberry is going to be squashed when the site reverts back from monospace. Maybe there should be a page option in future so that the site could be viewed in ‘Vintage Mode’
Rich
Awesome! Definitely a step forward!
Matthew
Much April fools
Niall
Nice work – but the screen update was way too fast. Can’t you emulate good old 1200/75 ‘Prestel’ baud rates. And What about restricting everything to a 1K page – like the BBC B Mode 7 (Teletext) screen?
Ronald Louwe
This new site is no good, I have to say goodbye… I’ll be back when the old site is back.
Ben Nuttall
We’ll miss you and your delightful sense of humour
Cheetah
Is there a prize for noticing the kitteh picture hidden by the stylesheet?
Ben Nuttall
Well done
Ragnar
liz
I recognise that pussycat.
Ragnar
The pussycat knows what I’ve done :-)
Matt Smith
I wish all website had the sense of humor that they have in Pi Towers!
Chris Clogs
What’s even better is it’s made my monitor into a touchscreen.
hiebel claude
fine : No more X : lynx in console.
Uses less memory and very much quicker.
Dave Akerman
Admit it – the web server has been replaced by an Arduino, hasn’t it?
Ben Nuttall
Hehe
Matthew
Dave, you’re soo funny
Daniel Craigie
Blowing the dust off Lynx, takes me back to the bad old days :-)
dan3008
I like it :) 1/2 Wishing that it’d stay like this. Dont think it would attract many new customers though… lol
Peter
Pretty cool, would be nice if you could convert new pictures to ASCII graphics when you publish articles, that would be awesome. But of course it’s 1st of April. Actually I still develop UIs using ASCII chars in new products, keep it simple is good. Keep the good work going…
Luetzel
Awesome design! You forgot to add the words “Don’t Panic!” in friendly, large, green letters on top of the page.
Mark G
Love it, disappointed to see four digit years. Please insert Y2K bug!
Michael
It’s funny how much faster this loads. Reminds me of my university days exploring the net on a Dec using the Lynx browser.
Gordon
Brilliant – very quick to download and read! Wish other websites would follow your lead. Gopher lives.
IrishFramboise (AlanMc)
I think it’s lovely.
Martin Cisneros
Hahaha very nice, but you missed comic sans and blinking texts haha :D regards!
JanW
This is truely brilliant! Can you keep this layout around as an optional way to view your site? Please do!
Richard Cllins
Ha ha, very good. Best April 1st joke so far. :)
Ben
Need to take off my vt520 terminal from dust and use it with lynx (on my linux machine)
Leo Leibovici
Love it!
Alexis
This new website is juste AWESOME!
I am sure it will bring a lot of new users!!!! :D
Electron_ninja
I don’t think iPads support the electric limes flavour range. Mine doesn’t. :(
David
Sorry, cannot verify taste of electric limes on iPad 3 – is this feature only available on BBC micro era computers?
GiaKonda
What a great surprise. Love it. I forgot it was april the first so I was really taken in :)
heppg
cool.
Keep this style forever.
Only this comment entry form looks a little bit too futuristic.
Chris
Reminds of watching star wars asciimation back in the day!
Harald
This style makes me feel twenty years younger :-)
Chris Clogs
Sadly it makes me feel 20 years older (but then I probably am…)
Abel
Ok..This is the correct way to work..
Robert M
Halp! I can’t find the blinking cursor! :-(
Robert M
Here… Let me get out my paintbrush…

Ben Nuttall
Lance says “Is that Carrie Anne?”
Robert M
That would’ve been more site-appropriate, huh? Alas, it’s just the Mona Lisa.
rasmundo
Now I’m disappointed, I thought it was the Virgin Mary come to show divine approval for all things Raspberry Pi… :)
Andyh
Hey, nice and clear and easy to navigate. None of these excess confusing gaphics.
Reminds me of the web before the “graphic designers” started messing things up.
Pity it’ll revert at midday – or perhaps tomorrow.
Frail Loop
Mike Redrobe
Hackaday want their design back!
Adrian Robinson
I was a bit dismayed not finding a copy of Sierra’s Kings Quest, otherwise a near perfect ‘next gen’ offering. (a little teardrop falls)
Christoph
Fantastic, very appropriate style!
Stewart Watkiss
Love the new site, but what’s the funny colour that is not green or black. Never had that in my 3270 days. Dem were de days ….
I used to be the envy of the office with my orange terminal – ooohhhh not green!
Michael Horne
Mooncake knows what I’ve done. Love it! ;-)

I licked it. They lied. :(
Adrian Robinson
you’ve got no taste!

Daniel
Awesome design!
I bought a Raspberrypi just a few days ago, running my own Website with PHP and mysql on raspberry pi now, programming Java, C and phython on it and I also did already some electronic stuff with it (blinking LEDś etc.) .
I tried most of it just with nano and Terminal window, so this site is exactly the feeling you get out of Linux!
Please keep it not just for April 1.! The design an the site will go viral!

Brilliant April Fool!! For Bens next trick a port of the original Elite perhaps?

not me promise, i got a right laugh this morning when i looked *_*

Horrifyingly, we’ve actually had a few emails complaining that we have lost our minds. Lesson for today: not everybody has a calendar.

We got tricked in school this morning by the teacher saying it was the 32nd of march!
Laurence Tyler
Love it! :-D Believe it or not, I have a friend whose actual website looks very much like this (though he did consent to using proportional fonts). For an intriguing taster, try: http://www.zyra.org.uk/nearrat.htm
I’ll have to keep a copy of the style info for this one!
Andy
It renders so quickly! :)
Colin Allison
My thoughts entirely – wahey, loads in milliseconds, rather than wait for all those other things to load. Wot? No tracking? ;-)
mahjongg
With so many comments, I wonder how long the page needs to load tomorrow!
Martin
Great Design. Pls. make a redesign of the favicon in ASCII Art also ;-)
Stewart Watkiss
Unfortunately when you launched the new site you appear to have lost the images.
Here’s the images that have been dropped from the recent posts:
Quake III bounty: we have a winner!
Stewart Watkiss
Oops – about spaces and html – needs to be placed between <pre> tags
liz
Your wish is my command. :D
Ben Nuttall
Ok you win
*applaud*
Ian
It’s a bit too modern for my tastes. Could it just be green? The red bits could be bold green, perhaps. I dislike all these modern colours. I had to buy a colour LCD screen when my VT100 packed up last year, but sometimes I put green Quality Street wrappers over my glasses to remind me of better times.
Andrew Oakley
What new design?
(ps. I am using elinks, the web browser of choice for middle-aged old-school colour-blind terminal nerds.)
(pps. any plans to start a gopher server?)
liz
*Winces* believe it or not, Andrew, I was actually a bit worried about how you’d be able to see today’s skin after conversations we’ve had about colour before! I am glad it’s readable.
asb
Now that gopher support has been removed from all the major browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome) it’s not very much fun anymore.
Andrew Schroeder
I think my comment was eaten during the website design switchover! Anyway, you can still get gopher in a modern browser, thanks to The Overbite Project
Rich Kavanagh
PLEASE can we keep this site??
It loads sooooo fast!!!
Ravenous
So this was your April 1st gag for this year? After things that came up on the forum the other aday, I was expecting it to be a fake web shop where people could buy single BCM chips… :)
Gordon
But you can buy single BCM chips, they come on a handy PCB with everything you need to make it work…
It’s called a Raspberry Pi

back again !
I have attached my VT520 terminal to a raspberry pi (instead of a PC as I have written down here before) with an USB->Serial converter. Works like a charm and this site is really responsive :) You rock guys !
Shutz
Ok, I must be really old, cos although I appreciate the day, and the sense of humour, I REALLY REALLY wanted to find something on here. Do I have to wait until 12.01 today or shall I hack into the old webpages?
ummmm….
ps, the spell checker is playing April Fools too, it wants to spell humour without an O !! :)
Well done all, looking forward to next year
Ben Nuttall
What are you looking for? Try going to http://www.raspberrypi.org/?s=some+search+term

Looking at this (new?) site, makes me feel like the kid in War Games………its a film from 1983 for those who didn’t know.
Ravenous
“Would you like to play a game?”
What a crazy movie, I mean computers taking over and starting a nuclear war, who would make a movie about that today :)
Pete
april fools? … Strangly I Love it …. so the jokes on you !
John Young
The new website is a mess unreadable, I thought it was April 1st joke.
No way a useful site for publishing information horrible not for printing

Excellent idea – I really miss sites filled mostly with information. Now days sites all filled with technology (flash, java etc.) that covers the lack of information. Very good move. Although personally I would changed the color theme.
Rachel Rayns
I’m pretty sure this is Art.
meltwater
Awesome site, will this be made available via Teletext please!
Ron
I hope this is only an April fools joke as in a way it is neat but to look at this all the time would suck!!
BlueSky
It is afternoon now so the joke is on you :)

This will get ruined when things return to normal, but here goes:
I’ve got a couple of shell scripts if anyone wants those.

This site is now being hosted on a Raspberry Pi Model A running Apache on a 256 Megabytes SD card.
Rob de Gunst
It looks great! I am one of these old guys, which started computing with a Commodore VIC 20 and after that a C64.
Giles
At last – a version of the website that loads quickly via my 500kbps village “broad”band!
Mindlord
Great look! I say keep it.
Avril
The new website design isn’t migraine/trance inducing at all! Especially as you have added the black to ensure following the ‘red and green should never be seen without something else in between’ rule.(some say except on an Irish Queen as a qualifier)
PS
love the Darlek and Tardis
Happy April Fools’ Day to all at Raspberry Pi
Giles Weaver
I like the new distraction free design! My only complaint would be that the font needs to be a little bigger!
If only all websites loaded this quickly :-)
Leo Leibovici
April Fools jokes are only supposed to be for the morning – I thought
Gordon
In which country?

April Fools jokes are only supposed to run to midday.
Good joke however – and I think you should keep it as an optional “fast reading” design :)
liz
Problems appear with the midday thing when you consider that your readers live in all time zones.
David
Fair point Liz
Ben Nuttall
Midday on 2nd April, right?
Shutz
Actually, surely you can run a script to reset at 12 noon as per the viewers time zone from ip address?
Ben Nuttall
You overestimate the amount of time we spend on pranks.
LKO
About time somebody fixed all this internet glitz and lens flare! This brings back memories of the 70’s sitting in the library on a Hazeltine 1500 with an acoustic modem connected to a CDC Cyber mainframe. 300 baud rules! Young whipper-snappers with their fancy graphics and wireless…. Now get off my lawn!
Ravenous
Agreed – who can read faster than 300 baud anyway…
Don
Exactly — and who could type a whole megabyte in a day?
John-Paul
Love it, the new design really emulates Raspberry Pi.
Yggdrasil
Hm, unfortunately my browsers shows no difference?! I’m surfing with links2 and elinks.
Will Castro
Can we at least have used hex instead of binary? The comment numbers are already becoming unwieldy…

you had me going until I realised the date – it is a joke – right?
plasticbrain
I don’t feel well.

I was really hoping that the redesign would reflect the state of the art in education technology, with features like: blink, marquee, layout with tables, and Comic Sans.
Sigh. I guess the geeks have taken over.
David Wallace
Ah does this take me back to the prehistory of personal computing! Of course, my first computer terminal was a Frieden Flex-o-writer.
At least you resisted the temptation to use cyan on blue.
Riccardo

At least keep this as an optional theme!
nathanael
Good joke – If there is any petty cash left for another bounty maybe use it to ask for a port of a standards compliant browser that can run javascript – perhaps there is an android one that can be ported?
Ben Nuttall
You mean like this? http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/5535
nathanael
ooh right havent used my pi online for a while – does it pass the acid test?
I had trouble getting the pi to work with my Huawei E220 dongle after a reinstall of raspbian broke it.
If it does pass the acid test then maybe I might have another crack at getting the dongle working.
nathanael
Javascript is necessary for this plugin: http://terminal.jcubic.pl/#demo so I must have it
Ben Nuttall
It’s very beta. A work in progress. We’re working hard on optimising it as well as making it HTML5 compliant.
nathanael
good job – I wouldn’t rush over the HTML5 compliance though – I think most other browsers in the wild are only just agreeing on how to render HTML4. There is something to be said for tracking just behind the curve, just as long as not everybody does it(!) Whatever happened to xhtml? I thought that was supposed to be the ‘future’ – oh yeah I remember now everybody ignored the standards so they changed the standards to fit around what people were actually doing.
Robert M
Aw, nertz… The paper tape has jammed in the 33-ASR, again.
nathanael
actually, once you get your eye in its not so bad
Amir
Finally, i can use Lynx to check this site without losing anything! ;-)
Tom
I think this new layout is terrible… Look dude, Green neon font on black background (anything with blackbackground) hurts my eyes when I have to read more than one sentence. Being honest and real, not just a hater. Rule number one of HTML design layouts… never, NEVER use black background for text. It should be something where the user doesn’t have to strain their eyes trying to read it. Fix it please. Thanks.
Ben Nuttall
No
Tzarls
Dear sirs at Pi Towers:
I must say you chose the worst day for introducing the new web site. Now everyone thinks this is some kind of a fool´s joke!
Sincerely yours,

PS: Is it true that upcoming Pi Display will make everything look like this?
Ben Nuttall
Sirs? There are women here too
liz
We are LADIES, Ben. LADIES. And don’t you forget it.
Tzarls
Oops – sorry about that. As an excuse, I´ll say that being spanish my first language, I´m not familiar with the language conventions that would be considered adecuate on this case…. maybe “Ladies and gentlemen”?

We Starfleet officers prefer “Officers and … ummm … Gentlepeople”, or something like that! : D

ARe you sure it wasn’t another process that did?
pete
wow this site is messing with my monitor big style .. firefox and linux mint !…
LKO
I just love this! Listening to the whining and moaning of the newer generation. Oh! The agony of fixed point Courier, the lack of graphics! Hey, 30 years ago, everything looked like this. Wow, this is like playing high-frequency noise to urge youngsters to move on, leaving us old programmers with peace and quiet. Gee, everything looks this green on my old Apple ][+ monitor; what’s the problem! Now, all I need to do is run my Pi camera’s feed through VLC’s asciiart renderer, and all will be well with the world…
liz
Actually, 30 years ago, things looked even less pretty than this. Red hadn’t been invented back then.
LKO
Hmmm… You’re right! We only had color on our TV because of the cool cellophane “colorizer sheet” we had in front of it. You know, the sheet you could put in front of a black&white TV that had blue up top, and green at the bottom?
Ah, this is the most entertainment I’ve had on April Fools in a long time. The response to the upgrade has been quite, polarizing — and I hope all tongue-in-cheek!
BluRaf
How about RaspberryBBS like on old dial-up days? :D

I feel kind of sorry for web designer who wrote the code. His eyes must have been burning after looking at those colors. Anyways, nice one on April fools. Keep the good work up!

What’s all this talk about red and green, all I see is grey? Hum, maybe I’m color blind?
exartemarte
Too fast! For real authenticity we need to see the characters appearing one at a time …
Rui B.
My RetroPI is now Retro!
Digiduck
Really love the new website….
compliments to the designer.
Geordie Birch
Please leave it just like this!

Very clever. Now can we have the proper site back please?

Loving the new look :)
Nice artwork in some of these comments!
Good Job

Well.. , The new website design save 90% more on my smarthphone

Love what you did with the place, LOL!

Awesome look for April Fools Day

Eric P. Scott
If only craigslist.co.uk had switched to a heavyweight design for the day…
Jonathan Hill
Love it. Takes me back only very fast! Icing on the cake would be a flashing green cursor.
ITGuy
It actually does taste “of electric limes when licked” Another first for the cyber community!
beta-tester
hahaha remembers me to the old 2400 bauds/s modem times (or 300 bauds/s acustic-coppler) and BBS servers (can not remember what BBS stands for)
have a nice 1’st april!

Bulletin Board System
ravi
Not appealing and can not make which one is link , if the site is running of Intel 386 , then this what i can expect
Darren Townsend
You guys do realise you’re completely mad, right ? Brilliant, but mad !
Jim Cook
The new website look reminds me fondly of my Timex/Sinclair computer that I assembled many many years ago. I still have it in a box somewhere….
boot
Great look, easy for the eyes. Brilliant
Kariky
Great!!! Good old days are back :-)
That red is maybe still too modern, all green would be better.
Use bold or something ?
Ryan Walmsley
Ben Nuttall
Nice effort
Bernie
Quite brilliant, especially for red/green colour blind peeps
Sebastian Ramirez
Congratulations! I really love the new design! And i am a true fan of the Raspberry Pi! Hope to read great news round here!

toooooo bad
Mark Bowman
I love it!
RMW5
Great design. Any chance that the date/time stamp could be printed in binary too?
gert
Just found a small issue. The trademark rules state: “You may not use our …. website design”. Some people out there have to change their web pages now! : – )
ramstrong
A text only site is very much desirable, but bold red/green over black is too much. You need to use pastel colors to ease off the eyes. I have had to stop reading at comment #73. Too much pain!
But please keep the text only option alive! Love the ASCII pics, too!
Ben Nuttall
I can’t find comment #73. In fact none of the comment numbers have a 7 or a 3 in them.
#wontfix
ramstrong
People today are so stupid, they don’t know how to count past 12 (after 10 fingers and two feet). Sheesh. ;)
Besides, it’s not comment #73 that is the problem. It’s the color scheme.
ramstrong
That comment comes with a winking smiley, that for some reason doesn’t render. I’m not really complaining. (smile)
Clifford
The reasons why displays no longer look like this is:
a) They no longer need to; technology has moved on.
b) They are really hard to read. Proportionally spaced serif fonts are designed for readability.
Why this design may be nostalgic, your target audience for RPi includes youngsters who have never used a floppy disk – the nostalgia is misplaced.
Amongst the comments I have read, I may be the only nay sayer, but I suggest everyone else has fallen for the form over function and not actually tries to read this for any length of time (the reason I have not read *all* the comments!).
Clifford
OK stupid me – I guess I’ll wait until tomorrow to confirm that this is a joke.
Ben Nuttall
Ah, but tomorrow in which timezone?
bertwert
Good question!
What timezone?
(DO pacific time… to make people believe it is real…)
Ben Nuttall
I share your concern that kids today have lived without the delights of floppy disks. Here is a picture of me being concerned about this: http://imgur.com/HsdJX4I
gert
I recognize that storage device! I used that with the ZX-Spectrum!!!
(I mean the one on the T-shirt)
Philip Le Riche
Please can you supply the ip address of the Gopher server – I don’t seem to be able to find it on Veronica.
zoel
hmmm it’s like “alien” site…..;-)
James
I don’t like it. I hope this is an April Fools joke. If it is, not a very good one.
Ben Nuttall
What should we have done instead?
Alex Eames (RasPi.TV)
Make a list of the IP addresses of all whingers, moaners and other —ers and block them next April 1st. (Then forget to remove the block.)
An even better one would be to leave the site like this, then the joke would have been that people thought it was an April fool’s trick.
Failing that, launch of a new bogus peripheral? But I guess that might undermine credibility too much, so not really on.
Nah. I think this one was about as good as it gets, to be honest. Caught quite a few people and a few ‘poor sports’ as well. Jolly well done, and lots of fun too.
Lucky
Keep on scrolling down and enjoy a game of PONG!
Lucky
but NO cyber requests! *nausea
Homer Hazel
I sure hope this goes away soon! It is not in keeping with the tenor of Raspberry Pi at all.
Ben Nuttall
Everyone at Pi Towers loves it and thinks it’s great. As does 95% of the community. Enjoy it!
fx
awesome!
simon
Ahh reminds me of scanning magazines for local BBS numbers writing down the serial protocols (8N1 usually) configuring my -shoe box sized- 2400 baud modem and hoping not to get engaged tone!
raspiuser
I guess it’s meant as April Fools joke… but honestly I realy like that Design. Can we keep it? Maybe as alternate design or something? :)
Ben Nuttall
We should make Raspbian look like this
stick
The latest versions of Microsoft Visual Studio have a color scheme option very similar to this, available all year round…
Ben Nuttall
Microsoft Visual Studio? Never heard of it
Ben Nuttall
I tried apt-get install visual-studio but it wasn’t to be found. How odd!
The Raspberry Pi Guy
Everyone is adding ASCII art! MY TURN:
The Raspberry Pi Guy
OH DRAT!
IT GOT RUINED
Ben Nuttall
I fixed it dude :)
Use pre tags!

Uhm, human user interface question I typically ask. How do the color blind folks like it? I DO love the simple text nature rather than the excessive flashy and large page overhead.

Please keep this as an option. The old website was very hard to load from a pi…

For those concerned the design is too old-fashioned to appeal to the children the Foundation is trying to target, I’ve prototyped a more modern variant: https://pic.twitter.com/bhx6hSN293
Comments welcome
Simon Walters
What a relief to see Comic Sans being used. Now I know that the Foundation is taking education seriously :)
Ben Nuttall
Hehe :)
bertwert
It is appealing to children…
Ben Nuttall
I love this
Pygar2
I agree this *would* be a nice option- as long as pix would load, and we could rightclick to save videos (which never seem to work for me; as of yesterday, all videos showed slow-motion juggling).
Matt
Opps. My beautiful ascii photo was mangled. Guessing who it was is going to be harder than originally planned!
Steve P
Now, to make my day complete, I want to see a punched tape reader for the Pi :)
mahjongg
you can make one from a tin can, and eight photo transistors.
bascule
Nope, still tastes like tobacco smoke and bacon crisps when I lick it when viewing the mobile site.
simon
I get a crackling sound and smoke coming out my ears when I taste it, no bacon crisps at all…
Ben Nuttall
Are you sure you’re not licking a pub ash tray?
rZero3
SRLY?, I know that this looks neat but SRLY? did ou have to do that?!?!?!.
Ben Nuttall
We didn’t *have* to. We didn’t have to form an educational charity and sell a single board computer for $35 either, but we do things like that. Enjoy :)
Earlton2
What was that early computer game where you had to put down the stick if you wanted to capture the bird?
I’m also reminded of my remote 110 baud Teletype access to the Carleton University computer in the early 70s. I telephoned their modem and captured the send tone. I then built a receive filter and send oscillator to save myself a 60 km drive.
Steve, I still have the Teletype and managed to punch some paper tape from my ‘Pi but I couldn’t read it in. The keyboard chatters continually and I’ve yet to check out the circuit. At the time I was trying to run a train set from the Teletype but I ran out of time. The project might still be listed here as PiTi.
Jonathan Morris
This is not good for those who are color blind, it does not appeal to children, and no images. I’m sorry but 0 on the aesthetics.
Ben Nuttall
Your comment is not good for those who are blind, it does not appeal to children, you spelled “colour” the American way and no images. I’m sorry but 0 on the sense of humour.
Michael
Just for fun, I viewed this in Midori and found that both the bullet points in the header and the comment numbers are rendered in binary! I’m not sure how you managed this.
I saw this site briefly last night just after midnight and I must admit (since it wasn’t really April 1st yet) my first thought was “I know they said they were having trouble with the new site but this is ridiculous!”.
Well done and I can’t believe the people who 320 comments later haven’t got the joke – hint: it has been spelled out about 100 times.
Ben Nuttall
CSS:
list-style-type: binary;
Not all browsers have this option available.
matt
Love it, but where I live April fools is “sooo…. Yesterday”
Charley
I thought My Browser was broke!
Does The April 1st Date have anything to do with the Design?
Happy New Year
Ben Nuttall
Happy new year
Ivan
Prehistoric garbage.
Jonathan Morris
It’s just an April Fools day prank. I just read the Twitter feed.
Jim Manley
Eben and Liz – I’m sooooooo glad you took my tiny, insignificant, earnest request last month to heart to make the site load much faster on a Pi, but this? This, I did NOT expect, no way, no how, no kidding, even after you said that a new design was coming soon. Little did I know … but what else is new? : D
I must now be vewwwy vewwwy cayhfuhl what I ASCII for in the future! How do you create an animated ASCII image in this format, anyway???
Kevin Hooke
Ok, I have to admit, I reloaded the page a couple of times thinking something was wrong before I realized … very well done :-)
AndrewS
I wonder if the post-count will get up to 100000000 ? How long until the webserver runs out of RAM? ;)
AndrewS
P.S. All this ASCII art and no-one’s written

I LOVE THIS NEW WEB DESIGN. WHY DON’T YOU KEEP THIS? THIS DOESN’T SEEM LIKE IT WOULD BE SOMETHING PERMANENT BUT PLEASE MAKE IT PERMANENT! I also love coming back to this website everyday!
Masafumi Ohta
HAHAHA,LOVELY LOVELY♪♪ We need more Kaomoji for this Comment :))
MahanB
Hay guys :)
I love raspberry pi and I use it alot and actually when I saw the new about the design I wasn’t really happy and now when I see it it’s just ridiculous, I mean this is not a terminal window! website should have pictures with easy to read content! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t say this is not cool, I just say this is not really easy to read and it does not have pictures of the projects and etc.. that we used to see before, please go back to the original design :'(
Ben Nuttall
We outright refuse to go back to the original design. You will never see it again.
tzj
Ok here goes…
tzj
Woops!
Ben… i forgot the pre tags!
Ben Nuttall
You think I’ve got nothing better to do at 5.15am than fix your ASCII art Eben!?
Ok it’s fixed now.
tzj
Take it the old school fools wearing a bit thin?
Thanks btw :)
Dean Ott
It’s a flashback for me to the 80’s when I used BBS and racked up lots of long distance charges calling various bulletin boards before the internet existed (in it’s present configuration.) Even BitNet and ArpaNet never looked so good.
Jeffrey
How is it possible that ANYBODY didn’t immediately realize this was an April Fool’s joke?
And timing the actual release of the new site for the day after was brilliant. Nice work all – very clever! :-)
nathanael
Specsavers once ran an April Fools ad for prescription windshields

AWESOOOOME :P Keep the Retro Site

Just a heads up – if you want to access the Ascii stylesheet on tag archive pages you will need to adjust the URL parameters, Otherwise the Ascii stylesheet won’t be applied: http://www.raspberrypi.org/?p=tag/python&fool=1
Sadly I missed this update on April Fools day but thank you for allowing us to preview this after the fact. Love the new website design Ben – its superb, well done!
Ben Nuttall
Great, thanks. Glad you like it!
Eric
Okay, so I appended ?fool to the URL and then everything looks green and rosy. But the moment I click on any link, it goes back to grey and white. Could the links be updated so green and rosy stays once enabled while navigating the site until you delete the ?fool from the URL manually?
Ben Nuttall
I can do, and I probably will do at some point, but it’s not a priority.
I’m only allowing access to it as a novelty. It’s not a skin selection.
jcubic
Was this created using jQuery Terminal (I have visitors from raspberrypi.org)? Do you have screenshots of the site or working demo maybe?
Ben Nuttall
No? It’s just a very basic stylesheet on top of the normal WordPress theme.
You can access the style here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/new-website-design-is-here/?fool

good post Liz for sharing an wonderful web designs….
