This retro desktop PC Raspberry Pi case is a nod at nostalgia for your desk

At our age, it’s no surprise we tend to lean away from modern minimalism and jump head first into nostalgia-laden treasures from the past. We also like miniature versions of big things. That’s why we like this Raspberry Pi case, which makes our naked green board look like a tiny retro desktop PC.

The image depicts the Retro Desktop PC Raspberry Pi Case V2. The case has a boxy shape with colorful accents reminiscent of vintage computers from the 1980s and 1990s. It features a textured finish, a faux floppy disk drive, and functional power and reset buttons.

Warning: will attract desk visitors

Now I don’t know what kind of workplace you hang around, but one of these on your desk is sure to spark interest from passers-by at Pi Towers, and who doesn’t absolutely love everyone who walks by your desk stopping to chat to you?

Inspired by Intel

Maker Fantastic Mr David based this creation on an old Intel 286 desktop PC he grew up with. The boxy shape and the off-white colour you were never quite sure was intentional rather than a build-up of grime are dead on in David’s design. He’s also included a floppy disk drive which operates as an SD card reader for the Raspberry Pi.

Fully functional desktop PC

This case is compatible with Raspberry Pi 3B, 3B+, and 2B, and it is designed to integrate seamlessly with your existing setup, so you’ll have a fully functional desktop computer in just a few simple steps. The case allows for easy access to all ports and connectors on the Raspberry Pi, and the power and reset buttons are fully functional. You’ll have to squint a bit to make use of the 3.5-inch HDMI display, but that’s all part of the fun.

Print your own piece of nostalgia

Each part of the case is delicately 3D printed, and you can download all the files you need to make your own from David’s Printables page. While you’re there, you might also be interested in his design for a retro Raspberry Pi TV case. It’s based on a Toshiba Blackstripe and is perfect for playing RetroPie games.

I had my son print one of these for me. Found it just a tad to small for the micro SD to SD extender I had bought. Even scaled up an inch all around it, I think it would have worked fine as still be ‘small’. Also the slot for the SD card was to tight. Again scaling up by an inch would solve that as well (make the slot bigger). I had to cut a bit of plastic out in the slot to get SD card to slide in properly to the adapter. Little things :) . Otherwise. Really neat!!!
That said I bought the Pansey desktop kit (like lego) which gives you ‘plenty’ of room for an RPI in there. Still a work in progress. Also bought their tower desktop kit as well (still in box).
