Pi Day is around the corner!

Pi Day

From Hawaii to New York City and beyond, Pi Day will be here this Saturday, March 14th. To celebrate, there are a bunch of Raspberry Pi events happening across the United States and all over the world. Some of these are big affairs, like at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA and others are small gatherings in libraries or makerspaces. Scan the list below (or view the Raspberry Jam map) to find out if there’s a Pi Day event happening near you:

Austin, TX

A few of us will be at SX Create, which is part of the SXSW Interactive festival. We’ll have a few demos and hands on activities that we’re excited to share. We’ll also be surrounded by companies, products, and organizations all related to hacking and tinkering with technology. Even though we’re especially excited about Pi Day on Saturday, we’ll be there for all of SX Create, which runs from March 13 to 15 and is free and open-to-the-public.

We’ll also be joining our friends from Wolfram to celebrate “Super Pi Moment” on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 am. They’ll have a countdown, FREE Pi(e), contests, and a special “selfie station” to capture the moment. This event is open to SXSW Interactive attendees and is right outside the Austin Convention Center.

Mountain View, CA

You’ll want to get to The Computer History Museum’s Pi Day Celebration early since visitors who arrive before 9:26am that day will be given free admission to their fantastic museum. And if you’re a little late, you can enjoy half-off admission until 10am. From 11:30am until 6:00pm, there will be Raspberry Pi workshops and a showcase of projects followed by Pie, Pizza, and Pints until 6:00pm.

St. Louis, MO

There’s a very strong community of Raspberry Pi users in St. Louis, MO so of course they’re getting together to celebrate Pi Day! The organizers say, “This Jam will build on what we’ve learned from previous events. Both as organizers and enthusiasts. As always we welcome new-comers young and old alike. We would also like to extend invitations to those in the business community looking to develop the Pi into products. Of course, we are hobbyists at heart so we really want to see the unique, strange, and ‘how did you do that?!’ projects.”

Little Rock, AR

Go out on a limb

In Arkansas, a third annual bake-off will take place at the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub. Organizers David J. Hinson and Tony Bates of Arkansas Geek Central had this to say:

Students, makers, and creatives are invited to bring their Raspberry Pi creations to compete for prizes, prestige, and most importantly bragging rights! In addition to the project competition, workshops and labs will be held for people just getting started with the Raspberry Pi, and for those interested in learning how to get the most out of their Raspberry Pi creations.

Visit their site for more information about this Pi Day event.

Upper Lake, CA

Hi Badr,
Looking forward to taking part on Sunday from ~1800kms away in Orange by the wonders of the web! =o) And hopefully get to see you in Rabat sometime if you organise more PiDays in future…the Marseille-Rabat flight would be very handy for a visit so I could help out in person and meet you all =o)
Amitiés, Alan.

ric96 avatar

hmmmm…. nice but I would appreciate if such things were held in DELHI too instead of just Bangalore in India.

Helen Lynn avatar

All these events are organised, not by us, but by local Raspberry Pi fans. All you need to start off is one other person and somewhere to meet – if you’d like a Delhi Pi Day event, you can make that happen! There’s more about how to run a jam at http://www.raspberrypi.org/jam/how/.

David Wright avatar

I know what I’ll be doing on Pi Day, like many other HAM radio operator’s worldwide I will be talking to people around the world via a Raspberry Pi fitted with a DVMega shield, working as a Dstar radio hotspot/repeater…

MalMan35 avatar

To bad they don’t have any thing in japan going on and even if they did I am sure that they wouldn’t have anything in hokkaido where I live not to mention it would probably be in japanese :/

aeni rahmadhani avatar

what about Indonesia

Helen Lynn avatar

As I replied to another commenter, all this is organised by local Raspberry Pi fans – it’s not us deciding where the events will happen, it’s all of you! You can make a local Pi event happen, and there’s more about how to do it at http://www.raspberrypi.org/jam/how/. You can start small: some of the most successful jams began with just a couple of interested people meeting up, and grew from there.

Al Strickland avatar

are there any in or around Richmond, VA?

Matt Richardson avatar

Not that we know of, yet! There’s a group up in DC that organized an event last weekend: http://www.hacdc.org/2015/02/12/raspberry-jam/ and there will be a Jam in Roanoke in Mid-April: http://www.meetup.com/roalug/events/220758360/

Keep an eye on the Jam Map: http://www.raspberrypi.org/jam/
And learn about organizing your own Jam: http://www.raspberrypi.org/jam/how/

For those of us seeing the calendar “the other way around” ;o) and (sometimes) driving on the other side of the road – I have a suggestion:

17/03/2015 => “St Pi-Tricks’ Day”

Looking forward to PiDay 20150314 and seeing all the global activity and buzz!

We at the Computer History Museum get visitors to Silicon Valley from all over the world, many to see our beloved Babbage Difference Engine being operated live and in color since its twin in London is now only operated on special occasions. We would like to share our special Raspberry-flavored celebration of Pi Day 3 – 6 PM Pacific Time (I think that’s 10 PM Saturday – 1 AM Sunday GMT) via something like a Google hangout multi-cast, so let’s see how many sites we can get linked up on that day. Certainly our Foundation friends celebrating at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX, would be a likely candidate, and we’ll try to get on-line when the museum opens at 3/14/15-9:26:53.59… PT (16:26:53:59… GMT). I’ll forward details as soon as I have time to test out how it should work since I’m a vidiot when it comes to live media :D

Pi(e) for all and all for Pi(e)!

Does your Difference Engine have a small teddy bear sat on / near it? :)

The Ultimate Pi Day Celebration in Worcester, MA
begins on 3.14.15 at 9:26 a.m. at the EcoTarium!

In celebration of *The Ultimate Pi Day*, the EcoTarium will open its doors early on Saturday, 3.14.15 at 9:26 a.m. in recognition of 3.1415926… the starting sequence of the mathematical constant Pi, used in the world of math to measure circles and spheres. Our friends from Table Talk Pies will be here with delicious treats and giveaways for the occasion. Come dressed as Albert Einstein as we celebrate his 136th birthday, too!

We are commemorating the day with Pi and Pie! In the morning, make a musical pie-plate instrument and join us in a Pi digit parade to start the festivities. Throughout the day, enjoy Pi-themed math and science programs, and learn about the science of making pie dough from Table Talk Pies bakers. Join in our community pie eating challenge, to see if a whole room of people can finish scrumptious Table Talk Pies in less than 3 minutes and 14 seconds. Take a 3.14 minute walk outside to see our birds of prey or our foxes! Check our web page for more details. Everyone is welcome!
