Each month in Raspberry Pi Official Magazine, we strive to bring you an eclectic mix of DIY electronics, 3D prints, microcontrollers, sensors, motors, and other fun things to do with Raspberry Pi. This year, we’ve once again taken a selection of our favourite builds and gathered them in one place: the Raspberry Pi Book of Making 2027. 

Whether you want to learn electronics, add a bit of razzle-dazzle to a traditional craft project, or do something big like building a robot or an underwater rover from scratch, we’ve got the project for you.

Origami paper circuits

Anything can be the basis of a circuit board — even a piece of paper. In this project, we add an RGB LED and a Raspberry Pi Pico to the ancient art of origami to create an ornamental lamp that you can program to be any colour you like. You can even turn it into a paper aeroplane if you feel like it. 

Get started with electronics

Electronics can be mystifying to the uninitiated, but once you know the difference between a resistor and a capacitor, a whole world of possibilities opens up for you. We’ll take you from zero knowledge to building your own circuits, and pretty soon you’ll be controlling them using a Raspberry Pi and a bit of computer code.

Design your first PCB

Building a circuit on a breadboard, with components connected by jumper wires, is a great way to learn and get a basic device up and running. Nothing, however, beats the feeling of making your own printed circuit board (PCB). We’ll run you through the software you need to learn in order to make your own PCB and create a device that will remind you to take your umbrella if it looks like it’s going to rain. 

Build an underwater rover

With a few PVC pipes from your local plumber’s merchant, a motor, and some basic electronics, you can build an underwater rover and control it using a Raspberry Pi. And that’s not all: you can fit a camera to explore the ocean floor (or, more realistically, the bottom of your bathtub — but in theory, it’s the same!).

There’s loads more in the Raspberry Pi Book of Making 2027, including a robot that you build from scratch, long-range radio communications, a CO2 monitor, a drum machine, 3D-printed moulds for soap… the list goes on and on.
