Dice Master 2000 allows visually impaired gamers to keep playing

YouTuber Hiro made this project as a birthday present for a friend who is visually impaired. It rolls dice for him and announces the result. It’s powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico and housed in a custom 3D printed case, and it boasts a few interesting features.

Hiro’s creation is named the Dice Master 2000. They designed it to make sure their friend, who is an integral part of their gaming group, could continue playing despite starting to going blind.

Pico-powered

The Dice Master 2000 is built around Raspberry Pi Pico. It features Braille labels on each button, making it tactile and user-friendly for visual impaired players. With the push of a button, the device announces the type of die selected, as well as verbally reporting the result of each roll, ensuring that the player can participate fully in tabletop gaming without relying on sight.

A few additional features, designed to enhance the user experience, make the Dice Master 2000 extra impressive. Players can enable quiet mode, reducing auditory feedback for those who don’t want their dice to shout at them. And percentage mode allows users to calculate rolling percentages without all that maths nonsense. The device also enables players to save and load custom dice pools, catering to the specific needs of different gaming scenarios and the user’s own preferences, with the ability to switch effortlessly between them.

Sturdy 3D printed casing ensures durability, and the hand-decorated buttons and mode selection instructions have a nice homemade vibe.

Find the maker to get the files

At the end of the build video, Hiro did offer to share the design files online for anyone wanting to recreate their accessible invention, but comments are turned off. If you’re a redditor, you can join the conversation with them here.

One of the finest 3D printed witch hats I’ve ever seen

We poked around and found that comments are open on Hiro’s Pumpkin Pi build video (above), so you could politely ask them there if you’d like to make your own dice roller. Be sure to stick around to hear about their Raspberry Pi-powered Halloween decoration first; apparently they build something with Pi every year!
